Users tagged with 'Options Pro' flair have demonstrated considerable knowledge on option trading.

Some have professional experience, but the tag does not specifically mean they are professional traders.

I am trying to Buy to Open a call option via Scottrade and I get this error, "Unable to enter the order because uncovered option trading is not allowed. Why are they asking me to cover my call option when I am buying an option. I read about uncovered options and that is only for sellers of options who theoretically are in a position of unlimited risk and loss.

If you buy a call option and don't exercise it, aren't you ONLY out the price of the option you bought it for? Although if you have that clearance and it's giving you that error, then that would mean that they require you to have enough money in your account to buy those shares if the call gets exercised I tried doing some research but it wasn't clear about why I can't buy options or put options. Do you have to be able to sell and write an option in order to be able to buy them?

Selling uncovered would be a level 4 type deal. You need level 2 to buy long calls and puts as well as long straddles and strangles.

Sounds good, I'll apply for Level 2. Just to clarify, the most I can lose on a Buy to Open long call or put is the price of the option? Why was this downvoted? By what mechanism could someone lose more than premium paid if they're straight up long with cash? There seems to be a serious bias against ever buying premium here, all about the streamroller pennies.

Hey I could be totally wrong here but do you have enough to cover the cost of the trade in case it gets assigned? I know that's probably not what you're trying to do, get assigned the calls. But if for example youre buying calls on a strike price of 50, you'd need 5k to cover the cost if you got assigned. I could be totally wrong, just throwing a guess out there.

Not saying you're trying to get assigned, I'm assuming you're just trying to trade the price of the option but your broker might be looking it from the worst case scenario for them: Diddy, you're probably right but I don't follow the logic completely. What do you mean get assigned the calls? I tried Googling it but it's still unclear. Is exercising the same as getting it assigned?

But the seller of a put must buy the stock at the strike price whenever the put owner exercises. I want to buy a single Buy to Open Put option.

I have the right to exercise the option, how can it be assigned if I never exercise it? I intend to only buy Calls and Puts, NEVER sell. They're all reading this as if you had asked about going naked short on puts and calls. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.
