By Sean Poulter for the Daily Mail and Press Association. A man cavorting in high heels and hot pants and an advert that cast doubt over Santa's existence topped the list of most complained about ads in , the Advertising Standards Authority ASA has revealed.

Some 1, complaints were filed against the ad, with many viewers citing the man's clothing and dance moves and its 'overtly sexual' content as reasons. Scroll down for video. Online payment website PayPal claimed third place with its portrayal of two children concerned that their parents had not been shopping for Christmas presents. Nearly people expressed fears that 'the ad revealed the truth about Father Christmas' - and despite the complaints not being upheld, PayPal decided to change its scheduling of the advert.

The controversial poster of a model in a yellow bikini under the slogan 'Are You Beach Body Ready? The image led to a protest in Hyde Park and more than 71, signed a petition calling for a ban on the poster, which was commissioned by Protein World to promote its slimming supplements. Some were torn down and defaced, and people complained to the Advertising Standards Authority ASA arguing it was irresponsible and offensive.

However, despite the furore, the ASA rejected the attack and insisted there was no harm in depicting what it called a toned and athletic model. By contrast, the watchdog did uphold a complaint about a TV advertisement for another company promoting weight loss for women.

The commercial for the XLS Medical pills showed two apparently fit, healthy young women using the pills to lose weight so they could fit into their holiday clothes. Critics, who included British Naturism, who said the TV ad was 'more like a commercial for anorexia'. And the ASA subsequently banned the commercial on the basis it created an 'irresponsible approach to body image and confidence'. The advertisement was the only one of the ten most complained about ads of to be banned by the ASA.

Perhaps surprisingly, the sexist portrayal of a man drew more complaints than any other advertisement in the year. The TV ad for MoneySupermarket featuring a man in denim hot pants and heels, twerking to a song by the Pussycat Dolls, drew 1, complaints.

Critics argued it was 'overtly sexual', 'distasteful' and 'offensive. However, the ASA said most people would accept the tongue in cheek humour. Viewers were unhappy with the way its scripts constantly used the word 'booking' as a euphemism for the 'f word'. An anti-smoking campaign from the Department of Health, which contained flesh and blood, was criticised for being too gruesome. The watchdog also cleared a commercial for electronic cigarettes despite complaints that it could encourage children to use them.

In each case, the ASA said people should understand it was a light-hearted play on words and was unlikely to encourage swearing among children. A commercial for Paypal was cleared despite complaints it might have revealed the truth about Father Christmas to children.

Campaigning and advertising around health issues also created controversy in The British Heart Foundation upset many people with a commercial showing a boy sitting in a classroom talking to his dad, who had died from heart disease. However the ASA ruled that while it was 'unsettling', it contained an important health message. Denim hot pants and high heels.
